Destiny of Courage

Das Ji Satwant Singh

Courage is the mark of a brave heart. But not every man can meet with its demands. It takes a special kind of person that can rise to the occasion when courage is required.

Satwant Singh was one of these. A man remembered best for the bravery with which he carried his convictions wherever he went. He was one of the five men in England made a ‘Baba Ji’ or an anointed preacher by Mahraz Darshan Das.

When Mahraz Jee was shot on the 11th November, Baba Ji Satwant was present and was similarly shot whist coming to his Masters aid. Fatally wounded, for ten days he fought for his life with all the tenacity and courage, for which he was well known. But by 3.35am on Saturday 21st November he breathed his last.

Born in Uganda in 1947, he was one of eight brothers and sisters. In 1968 he came to England and duly settled, working as a BT Engineer. A studious man, Satwant Singh loved to read and had a deep interest in spirituality. In July 1981 he met Mahraz Jee for the first time, and became deeply involved in the mission. It was some time later in 1984, whilst in India that Mahraz Jee asked him “will you work in my mission and spread the message abroad?” Baba Ji duly accepted.

As a Baba Ji in 1985 he toured Africa, and in 1987 he went to Denmark and Germany to further the mission cause.

In May 1987 Mahraz Jee met Baba Ji’s elderly parents at his house in Middlesex. He said to Baba Ji’s mother “if a woman is to bear a child, let it be a saint or one who is brave.” These poignant words are a fitting tribute and reminder, as his family and the wider congregation shares their loss with great pride.

A devoted family man, Baba Ji Satwant Singh is survived by his wife Das Kawaljit Kaur, and his three children.
