Why

Naam - Holy Word?

Where can you attain Naam?

The scriptures state; ‘Naam is a priceless jewel, which is with a true Spiritual Master.’

Jewels are no ordinary stones, they will be either found buried deep in the earth or secured in safe storage. They are of little value if they remain hidden. The analogy of Naam as a priceless jewel therefore insinuates unlimited wealth which is beyond the grasp of all. Similarly so is Naam. That is why the scriptures declare that Naam can only be attained through a Spiritual Master who is in possession of such treasure.

How can you attain Naam?

Guru Ram Das Ji in his poetic verses explains ‘You cannot attain Naam without doing service for a True Spiritual Master.’ To attain Naam one must join and serve his congregation, then the Master will take the jewel (Naam) from his store and give it to you.

Masters give you Naam from their endless stores, and thus make you beneficiaries of God’s house. The result of your service and your meditation on Naam is accrued to you. And like a small match that renders a forest into ashes, similarly the burden of your past sins is wiped away.

Can anyone receive Naam?

Again the scriptures are clear; Naam can only be attained if a person has good deeds accrued either in his present lifetime or in previous lives. When God blesses or rewards someone for their good deeds He puts them in touch with a Spiritual Master. In the Master’s congregation only after doing service will they receive Naam. The scriptures conclude that Naam can only be given by a True Spiritual Master.

Can you reveal your Naam to another person?

Mahraz Jee unequivocally states no. Naam is akin to a code word given by your Spiritual Master. In the realms of death it is used as a key to unlock the doors leading to a higher spiritual plane, the refuge of your Master.

The reason for not revealing your Naam is that any gains accrued from service and meditation by a person will begin to diminish.
